A metal ridge cap is basically a metal structure that can cap the ridge of any roof. You can easily install these metal ridges on your hip roof (where all slopes meet) to get rid of leakage and to make your roof more attractive.

To install a metal ridge cap on the hip roof, firstly you have to check your local building codes. Now you can start your installation by following the manufacturer’s instructions. You need to measure the ridge cap structure appropriately so that it can perfectly fit with your roof.

How To Install Metal Ridge Cap On Hip Roof?

There are two sorts of hip roof closures. One is solid, the other one is vented. According to your need, you can choose any of them to cap the ridge.

Installing a ridge cap on the hip roof is not a big deal. So no need to panic anymore. Just follow the steps below to do your work accurately.

Here are some tools which you need for doing this job. They are:

  • Cutting snips
  • Roofing gloves
  • Carpenters pencil
  • Metal screws
  • Silicon sealant
  • Caulking gun
  • Sealing washer

Now let’s have a look into some vital steps that will make your work easier.

Step 1: Check the building codes and manufacturer’s guidelines.

First thing first, don’t forget to check the local building codes of your area before starting the whole procedure. You should know what kind of ridge cap and procedures your authority will allow. Also, checking the manufacturer’s instructions is a major step.

Step 2: Appropriately measure your roof.

You have to calculate the total surface of each roof face. With triangular edges, the length from the basis to the lower edge is obtained by multiplying the basis length by the elevated point to the lower edge divided by two.

Now combine the lengths of the lower edge as well as the ridgeline to get the ridgeline’s length. Finally, deduct the lengths from the ridgeline 2 times downwards to the lower edge.

Sum the areas of the hip roof’s faces to get the overall area of the sloped roof.

The gross area of the sloping roof multiplied by five percent equals the number of added roofing materials you’ll need. And ensure a two-inch gap between the roof sheets.

Step 3: Cut the ridge cap ends.

Cutting one inch from both caps ends is necessary to make the inside label. Now you have to figure out your roof pitch by drawing a straight line to the aligned speed square with the exact pitch of the roof. You can use a measuring tape to determine the line’s angle.

With the help of a hand smear, bend the cut and uncut end in ninety degrees.

Step 4: Apply sealant on both sides of the ridge cap.

To begin, apply quarter-inch sealant on the marked line on both faces of the ridge cap. When the ridge cap is placed on the sealant, the cap nails will penetrate the middle of the sealant.

Now you can use silicon sealant on top of the external foam straps and the roof. But on another side of the foam, there is no sticky layer. So the strips which have an adhesive layer on both sides are batter to handle.

Step 5: Install vented ridge cap with profile vent.

To ensure appropriate ventilation, the gap at the ridge has to be two inches in width. To avoid water from gathering in the ridge cap corners, you can attach a profile vent half-inch up from the sloped cap.

If you have a non vented ridge cap, no need to follow this step.

Step 6: Secure the ridge cap with metal screws.

Use metal-to-metal screws for securing the ridge cap with the hip roof. The screws should be placed twelve inches apart from one another.

That’s all, you have finished your work!
