How To Install Polycarbonate Roofing

How To Install Polycarbonate Roofing?

When considering the various procedures involved in installing polycarbonate roofing sheets, it might be a bit intimidating if it is your first roofing installation. The roof, as one of the most critical components of every structure, must be properly built to offer efficient, long-term protection.

You need to start the installation by taking proper safety measures. Then, you have to use some tools to install it properly. The entire installation process can be divided into some steps. To successfully install the polycarbonate roofing, you better follow the steps.

Now, we’ll explain all the steps so that you can install the polycarbonate roofing.

Step 1: Ready All The Tools and Equipment

Installing polycarbonate sheets does not necessitate the use of specialized equipment. The necessary tools are;

  • Polycarbonate sheets
  • A hammer
  • A drill
  • Fixings and wood screws
  • Glazing bars
  • Flashing tapes
  • Breathing tapes
  • Eaves fillers
  • Shears, circular saw, or a fine-toothed handsaw

Step 2: Taking Proper Safety Measures

After you’ve gathered all of the necessary tools, double-check that you take all the required safety equipment. A scaffold and safety harness is required when you will be operating at a height.

To go on a roof, take utmost caution and wear suitable footwear. Never walk on the sheeting or put your weight directly on it. Wear hand gloves. When operating a circular saw, goggles are required.

Step 3: Making Sure The Right Side Up

Find a tag that indicates which side of the sheet faces the sun before placing it. Because there is only one UV-protected side of the sheet. If the uncovered side of the sheet is exposed to sunlight, the life of the sheet may be decreased and discoloration may develop.

To ensure that the protective film does not become placed alongside the sheet, it should be pulled from the sheets before installation.

Step 4: Cutting The Sheets In Necessary Size

To begin, cover the rafters with purlin tape to avoid expansion noise. After that, cut your sheets to the appropriate size.  Sheets may be easily cut up with a cut-off blade designed for plastic.

Step 5: Sealing The Polycarbonate Roofing

Apply appropriate tapes, closures, and sealants to prevent the entry of insects, moisture, and dust. When sealing polycarbonate roofing sheets, use blanking tapes and breather tape respectively to the top and the end of the sheet.

The breather tape allows air to circulate throughout the area, minimizing the likelihood of condensation.

Step 6: Fixing The Polycarbonate Roofing

Confirm your sheets are a perfect fit for the framework, without any gaps or unevenness. Please remember that overtightening the sheets might result in deformation and undue tension, as well as sheet failure. Start the fitting process with the glazing bars.

  • Glazing bars must be installed on the roof’s edges with holes spaced 500mm apart. These holes may then be used to place your fixings, essentially securing your bars in preparation for the sheets.
  • Then install eave fillers. After that, start connecting your sheets to the glazing bar. Work your way from one end to the other.
  • Among each sheet, connect a glazing bar that will ensure all gaps are sealed effectively.
  •  After you’ve positioned the sheets on your roof and secured them with the bars, add the screw caps and screws to create a secure, long-lasting fix.
  • Then, drill holes on the roofing sheet. After that, add screws and/or fastening buttons to reinforce the polycarbonate roof even more.

Step 7: Finishing

Clean all the dust caused by the drilling. Check that all the fasteners and screw caps are applied perfectly.

Verdict

I guess you’ve got a proper guideline on how to install polycarbonate roofing. So, don’t waste your time and get started on your installation process.

Make sure that you haven’t skipped any steps. Or, don’t overlap any. Be careful with the step-by-step process.

Stay safe. All the best.
