What Is A Roof Pendant
The stratum that constitutes Mount Morrison inside the Sierra Nevada in Mono and Fresno counties, California, is a typical, well-documented form of the roof pendant. The Sierra Nevada roof pendants are a perfect illustration of the contact metamorphism process.
This roof pendant is made up of a 15,000-meter-thick (50,000-foot-thick) succession of intricately folded and deformed metasediments and metavolcanic layers.
The two-thirds of that roof pendant is composed of metasedimentary layers ranging from the Cambrian to the Silurian and from the Pennsylvanian to the Permian.
The western part of the roof pendant is made up of Mesozoic metavolcanic rocks. The pendant rocks are surrounded and intruded by Mesozoic igneous rocks.

Mount Morison Pendant
The MountMorrison pendant has a complicated construction. The Morrison block’s rocks were initially distorted by north-northwest–trending pitch faults and depositional synclines including Early or Mid Permian layers.
Bishop Creek Pendant
The Bishop Creek pendant, located east of the Middle Fork of Bishop Creek, is the biggest mass of Bishop Creek. This roof pendant is caught between two intruding objects of varying ages. One is a connection exemplified by the narrow septum that runs over the Mid Fork and beside North Lake. Another narrow unit extends southeast from a newer metasedimentary phase on Mt.
Humphreys, passes into the Development area at Mountain Emerson, and thins near the North Branch of the Bishop River.
Gull Lake Pendant
The rocks in this pendant have been dramatically changed. The Meadow Formation, Mount Morrison Sandstone, and the Squares Tunnel Formation are all present, together with a thin McGee Mountain Member.
The Gull Lake pendant has an intriguing construction. There appears to be a big northeast-trending block in the southeastern half of the pendant, while pieces trend northward in the western part of the pendant.
